We are proud to present the first edition of Rendition Journal, a new project by Kaleb de Groot. It is intended to become an ongoing platform for different artists and their output, of which De Groot himself is the first participant. His artist book (which comes in the shape of a series of silkscreen, digital and embossed prints) Engine of Krioyo is the result of a residency at the Amsterdam based AGA LAB in 2016. It is based on a travelog – notes, drawings and a wide variety of found footage and quotes – compiled during his residencies in Xiamen (China), Lusaka (Zambia), Dire Dawa (Ethiopia), Willemstad (Curaçao) and Kutacane (Indonesia). All this travelling has caused an array of iconographic and semantic differences to pass through his practice, which made him wonder how theory, social engagement and form can be brought together. This first edition of the Journal can also be seen as an extension of de Groots’ experience with organising artistic platforms (Toko, Motel Nooitgedacht, Fatform and the Counter Memory project). The Rendition Journal will grow further as a space in print.

Kaleb de Groot describes his work as psycho-geography, a term that encapsulates his work and lets him investigate the relation between geographical locations/forms and individuals that operate, live in, and utilize these surroundings. Through these investigations, De Groot focuses on architectural manifestations and the fragile balance between form and power, creating visceral installations in public space and inside the white cube to test and question the perpetually shifting glocal agreements and the psyche of communities and individuals. He has worked on many different projects in China, Zambia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Curaçao and his native Netherlands, where he currently resides and works from.
