In her first short film Jivan van der Ende depicts her five-year collaboration with bodybuilder Jurgen van Wesemael. Through this disarming collaboration, the artist builds a bridge between two different worlds: the world of the spectacular Belgian bodybuilding championship, which is becoming increasingly popular among the young male generation, and the artist’s studio, where she reflects on the body/human being as a living sculpture within art and capitalist patriarchy. Through her abstract and playful visual language, the artist explores themes such as objectification and the link between our identity and social and political position.
Van der Ende establishes a connection between the bodybuilder and her queer self, between their practices and identities, and explores how capitalist society and its institutions treat the body as a commodity and project oppressive sexism.
