23 October, 20 -22 hrs
Bar open: 20 hrs
Start programme: 20.30 hrs

Mascara Film Club is an artist-run film club, which mostly takes place in North-East London. Through their programming they seek to bring into conversation films and people, and foster a self-organised infrastructure for moving image practitioners. Mascara Film Club is currently organised by Kasia Lukasik, Rufus Rock and Daisy Smith. For their first screening in Amsterdam, Mascara Film Club presents a group screening of films where family, friends, hometowns and pets become material to be both worked from as well as through. Anchored in autobiography, these videos present complicated political contexts through the lens of intimacy, reminiscence and family tensions.

Programme:

Harilay Rabenjamina Le Nez De Ma Mère Sous Titré/My Mothers’ Nose, 2021 (12 mins)
A son and mother take a walk as the son reveals the implications of his mother copying his sister in getting plastic surgery. Le Nez De Ma Mère Sous Titré is held by the collection of the CAPC musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux.

George McGoldrick Paul the Octopus, 2018 (1 min)
A dog dressed as Paul the Octopus chooses an EU Flag and is praised by its father.

George Kuchar Creeping Crimson, 1987 (16 mins)
George visits his mother in the hospital on Halloween and contemplates the autumn colors.

[Interval]

Stephen Sutcliffe City of Dreadful Something, 2019 (4 mins)
City of Dreadful Something (which in this case is Leeds), draws upon Herbert Read’s archive as a jumping off point, combining a poem by the late Martin Bell, cover visuals from Anarchy magazine, and Sutcliffe’s father’s bread delivery route. The work is as much about the West Yorkshire that Sutcliffe was raised in during the 1970s and 1980s, as it is a response to an archive of cultural history.

Sam Marshall-Lockyer Scene 4, Take 9, Street Named Psycho politics, Ep 1, Se 1, 2022 (17 mins)
Sam and her childhood friend (who is now an influencer and reality TV-star) attempt to recreate scenes from Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. It is not clear who is the director.
