Johann Arens uses installation and video to survey the documentary properties of public interiors and their inherent social textures. By deliberately placing artworks atypically he redirects attention to places in the peripheral vision. At P/////AKT he is presenting a new film project, resulting from a shared research with Dr. Alejandro Granados (Research Associate in Biomechanical Engineering at UCL London), along with furniture and educational material from the medical training centre at Amsterdam’s UMC hospital.
The film installation debates the relevance of tactility and contact-based simulation tools and the implications for the plasticity of sculpture as well as human anatomy. The point of departure is the simple observation that both, medical training practice and experientially driven art are conditioned by a shared frustration; the limitation of touch.
The film features two haptic simulation systems; one constructed to allow medics in training to gain experience in patient examination and palpation, the other connecting an historical sculpture to a virtual environment with changed surface resistivity parameters. The increasing relevance of touch-based interfaces for our social environment calls for a critical engagement. The exhibition gauges the significance of computed simulation for cultural artefacts and the intimacy of the audience. What can a heightened awareness of tactility and palpation offer to the principles of contemporary medicine and personalised experience of sculpture?

Johann Arens gebruikt installatie en video om de eigenschappen van openbare interieurs en hun inherente sociale textuur te onderzoeken. Door zijn werk opzettelijk atypisch op te stellen verlegt hij de aandacht naar plekken in het perifere blikveld. In P/////AKT presenteert hij een nieuwe filminstallatie die resulteert uit een onderzoek dat hij met Dr. Alejandro Granados (onderzoeker van biomedische techniek aan de UCL in Londen) uitvoerde, samen met meubilair en educatiemateriaal afkomstig van het medische trainingscentrum van het UMC ziekenhuis.
Centraal staat de vraag omtrent de relevantie van tactiliteit en op aanraking gebaseerde simulatieapparatuur en de implicaties daarvan voor zowel de plasticiteit in sculptuur als de menselijke anatomie. Het vertrekpunt is de eenvoudige observatie dat beide, de praktijk van medische training en experientiëel georiënteerde kunst, geconditioneerd zijn door een gezamenlijke frustratie: de beperking van het aanraken.
De film toont twee haptische simulatiesystemen; de ene is ontwikkeld om medici in opleiding ervaring te laten opdoen met patiëntenonderzoek en palpatie, en de andere verbindt een historische sculptuur met een virtuele omgeving met veranderde parameters van de oppervlakteweerstand. De toenemende relevantie van op aanraking gebaseerde interfaces binnen onze sociale omgeving vraagt om een kritische benadering. Met de tentoonstelling onderzoekt Arens de significantie van computersimulatie met betrekking tot culturele artefacten en de ervaring van het publiek. Wat kan een verhoogd bewustzijn van tactiliteit en palpatie betekenen voor de principes van de hedendaagse geneeskunde en persoonlijke ervaring van sculptuur?
De tentoonstelling kwam mede tot stand in samenwerking met het Amsterdam UMC en dankzij de genereuze steun van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Mondriaan Fonds en Ammodo.
